Our Story

Hi, my name is Mustafa. I launched Palm Bites in 2019 to get my dad back to work after he was forced to retire due to his age. We utilized his quality assurance background with my love of dates to create the best date products in the market.

As first generation Iraqi immigrants, there is no such thing as a retirement plan. He was devastated as work was his life, so he applied to numerous jobs but was usually over qualified or too old for the role that was hiring.

After 3 years of looking, he lost hope. I hated seeing my father, someone I looked up to all my life, feel unwanted and unworthy of work.

Dates have always been part of our daily routine. We had 2 palm trees in our front yard in Baghdad that we harvested twice a year. Growing up, I had date syrup mixed with tahini for breakfast or as a mid-day snack. Culturally, we gift dates for special occasions, and we offer it with a tea or coffee when guests come over.

The health benefits coupled with the cultural and religious significance of dates made them a staple in our household and lifestyle.

Between the urge to get my dad back to work for the sake of his mental health and our family's love for dates, Palm Bites was born.

What year were you established?

We registered the business in May 2019, began making our chocolate dates for Shopify's Waterloo office in Jan 2020 where we got proof of concept. We offically launched our website during COVID in March 2020.

What inspired the creation of Palm Bites?

Palm Bites began as a way to get my dad back to work after he was forced into retirement due to his age. We didn’t know what to build—only that we wanted something where his skills would shine. After months of ideas going nowhere, inspiration struck unexpectedly during a coffee visit with family. With nothing to serve, I filled dates with peanut butter, a snack my mom used to make, and everyone loved it. The next morning, in the shower, the idea clicked—and Palm Bites was born.

What's the future of Palm Bites?

Since 2019, we’ve proudly shared over 10 million of our creations—and we’re just getting started. We’re currently in a focused growth phase, expanding our presence by bringing our existing products into more stores and more hands. Looking ahead, our vision includes opening additional retail shops and café concepts across North America, while continuing to innovate and grow our product lines.
